Hands-on with the touchscreen Verizon Hub

January 31st, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Mobile Phone, Peripherals & Accessories

Think of it as a Wi-Fi-enabled home VoIP phone complete with smartphone features—well, some smartphone features, anyway, including customizable weather and calendar widgets, mapping and searchable directories, streaming videos, and more. Read on for my hands-on impressions.

Available Feb. 1 for $199 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate (a pricier no-contract version will also be available), the Hub connects to your home broadband network via Wi-FI or Ethernet and looks something like a wireless base station on steroids, complete with a jumbo color touchscreen boasting time/calendar, weather, voice mail/missed call, and calling feature widgets.

blue-foldkey

For all the talk about touchscreen displays and interactive keyboards on handheld devices, you just can’t beat the real thing for bashing out those outraged Internet comments or long-winded corporate nonsense management briefs. Still, most keyboards are too big for slipping easily into your inside pocket.

keisan

Tokyoflash, purveyors of fine eye-candy for your wrist, has hit another homerun with their latest LED watch, the Kisai Keisan, which uses long convex lenses to diffuse the LEDs underneath, producing a striking effect. And lest you fear that this watch is uncharacteristically simple to read, fear not: “Simply touch the button and digits will appear in four vertical lines. Add the digits in each vertical line to read the time. The date is displayed in the same way after the time. The time and date can be accelerated by pressing button A again.”

January 14th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Mobile Phone

exedaIs it just us, or do Android handsets shown off to date just plain boring when it comes to design? Guess that seems to be the recurring theme, augmented by the Exeda from Compulab. Targeting the enterprise market (who seem to be sidelined when it comes to beautiful design), you will get the following on the Exeda :-

  • 3.5″ sun-readable VGA touchscreen display
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Capacitive touchpad
  • 520MHz Marvell processor
  • 128MB RAM
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 bootable
  • Quadband GSM/GPRS, CDMA and 3G UMTS

It will arrive this March for a yet unannounced price.
The device in the picture here is a new handheld from Compulab. The exeda has a 3.5 inch sun-readable VGA touchscreen, a full QWERTY keyboard, a capacitive touchpad, a 520 MHz Marvell CPU and 128 MB of RAM. It will also have quadband GSM/GPRS, CDMA and 3G UMTS, WiFi support and a 10/100 Baste-T Ethernet port. The best of all is that the handset will work with Android and in case you don’t like it, there’s Windows Mobile 6.1 support too. The exeda will arrive in March so that’s when we should have some pricing details for you.

Pink Samsung Instinct From Sprint

January 14th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Mobile Phone

samsung-instinct-pinkAh, at least some parts of the world are still pretty sane – Sprint will be offering a pink version of the Samsung Instinct from today onwards, instead of the Valentine’s Day release which we originally thought. Nice to know they have priced it at just $99.99 after you settle for a 2-year contract and $100 rebate, which makes the $599 Best Buy pricing extremely outrageous, which is probably due to misinformation. As mentioned before, the change is only cosmetic, so don’t expect anything different inside. Will this color draw more people to the Instinct?
