Acer Aspire One AO751h reviewed — sweet battery life, sad CPU marks

June 27th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Desktop PC & Notebook

Acer’s 11.6-inch netbook — the Aspire One 751h — has been available Stateside since mid-May, and Laptop’s spent some quality time with it, delivering a full review. Overall, they found the nice, large screen to be welcoming, and the battery life (on their 6-cell configuration) was fantastic — clocking in at over seven hours. They were, however, pretty disappointed in the 1.22-GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, finding it to really slow the unit down. They note that other similarly priced models boast better processors, and might be a smarter choice. The Aspire One 751h runs $399 with a 3-cell battery, and $449 for the 6-cell version. Hit up the read link for the full review. One more shot after the break. More »

NVIDIA pops out five new mobile GPUs to fill invisible gaps in its 200M series lineup

NVIDIA is filling in what it presumes to be holes in its next-generation GPU lineup, adding the 40nm G210M, GT 230M, GT 240M and GTS 250M, with GDDR3 memory ranging from 512MB to 1GB, to its existing GTX 280M, GTX 260M and GTS 160M laptop graphics cards. Apparently the new cards sport “double the performance” and “half the power consumption” over the last generation of discrete GPUs they’re More »

Shuttle’s H7 5800 packs Core i7 and all the trimmings into a small form factor PC

These days, Shuttle’s particular brand of small form factor PC isn’t as exactly stunning as it once was, but it’s still fun to see just how much they can cram in there. Shuttle has taken its barebones SX58H7 Core i7 kit and is now offering it preconfigured with Core i7 Extreme processors, 6GB of RAM and GeForce GTX 285 graphics (With support for SLI or ATI CrossFireX). Unfortunately the base price for the H7 5800 is a silly high $2,149, and once you actually get to any of those previously mentioned trimmings, you’re looking at around $4k for a computer. It might be slight technical feat, but we can’t imagine More »

Video: Archos 9 pctablet resistive touchscreen impresses

Video: Archos 9 pctablet resistive touchscreen impresses
Archos attempt to resurrect the UMPC category of devices got off to a good start yesterday in Paris with the launch of its 16-mm thick Archos 9 pctablet — a 9-inch 1024×600 pixel tablet riding an 800MHz or 1.2GHz Atom Z515 processor, 1GB of memory, up to 120GB disk, webcam, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g WiFi, and SIM card slot for WWAN connectivity. Archosfans just posted a video of the Archos 9 prototype in action and honestly, that resistive touch-screen looks pretty damn impressive to finger taps. However, since it’s running Windows 7, a full-blown desktop OS, you’ll still need to pull out the included stylus on occasion to interactive with the Windows 7 UI or applications designed for a mouse and keyboard. Fortunately, the Archos 9 offers an optical mouse on the right-side bezel and left and right mouse keys along the left. Other notable highlights include a removable battery of undetermined capacity, a docking port for added expansion (Ethernet, 2x USB, VGA output), stereo speakers, and an adjustable kickstand for viewing video or working on the Archos 9 with attached USB keyboard and mouse. The Archos rep says it’ll be priced between €450 and €500 when it ships around the time Windows 7 launches at the end of October. What we’re wondering is how much finger-friendly UI More »

Lenovo's ThinkPad T400s in the wild, still waiting on an official debut
Lenovo is apparently slimming down its T400 series ThinkPads, with the new T400s being caught in the wilds of technologyland. Despite looking nearly a century old in these hands-on shots, the laptop seems to be pretty modern under the hood, with SSD, DisplayPort, eSATA, WWAN, a 14.1-inch WXGA+ LED backlit display, 5-in-1 multicard reader… the list goes on. It’s all packed in at around 0.83-inches thick (including a built-in disc drive), More »

Dell UK offers free flights to US or Europe with Inspiron or Studio 15 purchase
Dell’s offering a free return flight (that’s round-trip in Yanklish) from the UK to the US or Europe with the purchase of a £499 Inspiron 15 or £599 Studio 15. There are limitations such as airports (Heathrow and Gatwick only for trips to the US) and destinations (New York, Boston, DC, Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid, Lisbon, and a few more city airports) but the offer seems to be a good deal if you’re flexible and wanted to fly to any of these cities over the next year anyway. Just don’t get too hung up on any one destination when submitting your request: More »

HyperMac External MacBook Battery Review

HyperMac External MacBook Battery Review

World’s first & only external battery for Apple MacBook
- Power your MacBook for long extended periods away from the grid!
The Verdict: Enormous battery life. While we tested the 222Wh version, the only difference is the capacity, and you can do the math to figure out how much life each version has. In our test, the 222Wh was able to sustain a MacBook Pro at full charge for eight straight hours. Couple that with the internal battery that the Pro already has, and you’re into double digit work time if you buy one of these.

Unlike the Powergorilla, the HyperMac actually is capable of charging the Pro (there’s a MacBook Air style charger as well). That means you can use this as a portable charging station as well as a constantly-tethered power supply. But you pay for that in terms of lugging around a heavy ass block of aluminum. More »
