T-Mobile announces impending myTouch 3G

June 27th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Mobile Phone, iPhone

T-Mobile has announced that they will be offering a new Android-powered handset in due time to oust the aged G1 smartphone, and this time round it would be the T-Mobile myTouch 3G that will be taking over the baton. Just in case you were wondering the myTouch 3G is also known as the HTC Magic in other parts of the world, and the smartphone will come packaged in a sleek body alongside a contoured feel, boasting a wide range of new features which will surely make it a success compared to its rather muted predecessor. Alongside a full touchscreen display, you also get a virtual keyboard that helps you whip out text messages as well as emails in double quick time without getting bogged down by typos.
The T-Mobile myTouch 3G will empower users to create a unique, individualized wireless phone and experience, since you will be able to harness the ability to richly customize menus, wallpapers, icons and more, with over thousands of Android Market applications to take advantage of as well. Basically, the myTouch 3G will evolve to become a virtual extension of oneself. Too bad the choice of colors that the handset comes in will be limited to just three at time of publishing – and we’re looking at black, white and a distinctive merlot.
HTC is the brains behind the myTouch 3G’s design, so you can expect quality parts to be thrown into the mix. First of all we have a 3.2″ HVGA touchscreen display and virtual keyboard that is able to automatically orient itself between portrait and landscape modes, depending on how you’re holding up the myTouch 3G. Not only that, it is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera, although one thing that has left us scratching our heads would be the lack of a flash in the camera – something that other manufacturers have managed to cram in despite releasing a slim handset. That aside, the myTouch 3G will also come with a music player, a microSD memory card slot, video playback, email, MMS, Wi-Fi connectivity and support for T-Mobile’s 3G network. You can place a pre-order for the myTouch 3G from July 8 onwards if you’re a current T-Mobile customer, where $199.99 will net you the handset with a two-year agreement. Shipping commences later this July. Do excuse the Vodafone image above

Palm says licensing webOS “not a religious issue”

Palm says licensing webOS "not a religious issue"

Palm had its quarterly results conference call yesterday and although CEO Jon Rubinstein and CFO Doug Jeffries kept a pretty tight lid on the future product talk, they did say that licensing webOS to third parties isn’t “a religious issue for us.” That’s pretty vague, sure, but we can’t help but immediately think back to the golden age of Palm OS, when licensees like Sony put out amazing devices like the Clie PEG-NZ90 that we’ve lovingly mocked up with a webOS screenshot above — we’re sure Palm’s upcoming handsets will be interesting in their own right, but we’d love to see a manufacturer like HTC riff on webOS the way it’s tweaking Android. Of course, Jeffries also said Palm has “no plans at this time to even talk about” licensing, so this is all just a pipe dream for now, but let’s not ruin the moment, okay? Hit the read link for the full call transcript.

Palm Pre runs Doom, smartphone-loving space marines rejoyce

Palm Pre runs Doom, smartphone-loving space marines rejoyce
If you were holding off on buying a Pre until it had some great games, start warming up that credit card. We knew homebrewers were already at work and one of those, a bloke who goes by the name Sargun, has managed to get the iconic Doom running on the phone — or the open-source PRDoom, anyway, which is close enough for us. Sargun re-built the game to use the DirectFB graphics library to pipe all the two- More »

Compal tries harder with Intel-based KAX15 MID

Compal tries harder with Intel-based KAX15 MID
We’re not so sure that being the “world’s smallest Windows-based MID” is really a benefit for those who appreciate keys that are large enough to mash and screens that are large enough to see, but whatever the case, Compal seems pretty proud of its accomplishments here. Shown off along with scores of other me-too MIDs at Computex, the KAX15 is based around Intel’s existing Menlow platform and sports the polarizing tilt-and-slide mechanism for unmasking the QWERTY keyboard. As for specs, we’re told that it packs an 800 x 480 display and an 800MHz processor, but further details have yet to flow. There’s a hands-on vid just past the break if you’re somehow intrigued with shoving Windows in your left cargo pocket. More »

Eye-Fi Pro wireless SD card hands-on

Eye-Fi Pro wireless SD card hands-on

We’re all pretty spoiled in these digital days; not that long ago taking a look at a vacation’s worth of photos required a trip to the store, a couple of hours (or days) wait, and then the better part of an afternoon getting fingerprints all over a stack of poorly composed shots that you daren’t throw out because you just paid good money to have them printed. Now you pop a memory card into your computer, More »

3G iPhone codenamed N82? Tablet?

3G iPhone codenamed N82? Tablet?
Erica Sadun has been doing some digging around and found an extra platform in the iPod/iPhone lineup. Along with the current iPod Touch (N45), iPhone (M68) and a “simulator”- which means the SDK will likely contain a simulator), she found reference a currently unknown “N82″. Could this be the new 3G iPhone set to be released later this year? Or perhaps this could be a reference to a new Apple Tablet or Mac Touch? Or maybe Apple putting out a Touch OS release (no) for Nokia’s N82 Hardware?

Palm Pre Disassembled, Cost Estimated at $170

Palm Pre Disassembled, Cost Estimated at $170

You know the deal—as fast as companies can churn out gorgeous, functional gadgetry, nerds worldwide are waiting in the shadows to tear them apart. The Palm Pre barely survived the night before being torn up.

It looks like a reasonably painless disassemble job, at least at first, though they don’t recommend removing the heat shield. Once all the parts were arranged on a table, the guys at Rapid Repair estimated the hardware cost of the Pre at just about $170, which makes the smartphone’s $199 price tag a pretty good deal for us consumers. Go check it out if you like seeing your gadgets unadorned and forcefully stripped. [Rapid Repair]

Pharos Traveler 137 GPS Smartphone

Pharos Traveler 137 GPS Smartphone

Getting a jump start on CES 2009, location-based provider Pharos officially introduced on Tuesday the Pharos Traveler 137 smartphone, a Windows Mobile 6.1-based handset with integrated GPS and navigation software. The unlocked, quad-band GSM phone will be available late in the first quarter for $599.95 and has been awarded a 2009 CES Innovation award for its navigation solution.
The Pharos Traveler 137 differentiates itself from other GPS-enabled smartphones in that it doesn’t require a cellular connection to operate as a navigation device. The unit comes preloaded with Pharos’ Smart Navigator software with the vector map and routing calculations, so you’ll be able to view maps, create routes, and get turn-by-turn directions without a network signal. Other features of the Smart Navigator service include real-time traffic, points-of-interest search, and a feature called Follow Me, which lets friends and family view your GPS locations via the Internet or a Windows Mobile device.
